Do you let your dog sniff on walks? You absolutely should! Here's why:
The part of a dog's brain responsible for processing olfactory stimuli is 40x larger than that of a human meaning they can smell 10,000 to 100,000 times better than we can. With their acute sense of smell, dogs can essentially "see" the world through their noses. By allowing your dog to use this powerful sense, you are helping them better understand & discover the world.
Secondly, sniffing is a calming behavior that also provides mental stimulation. In fact, a sniffari (as I like to call it) has been proven to be more beneficial than a purely exercise walk for tiring out dogs. Allowing your dog to sniff can help create a calmer, more well-rounded dog.
So go ahead and let your dog sniff as much as they want on your next walk!
